An earthquake hit Japan today (March 20) sparking tsunami warnings and shaking buildings.

Footage shows a multi-storey car park and overhead cables shaking in the city of Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture as the tremors are felt.

The magnitude 7 quake struck near the east coast of Honshu at 6:09 pm local time, according to the United States Geological Survey.

Residents in the capital Tokyo felt the earthquake shake their buildings.
