On Monday, Kim Janey became the acting mayor of Boston.

She stepped into the role after Marty Walsh resigned to become President Joe Biden’s labor secretary.

Janey is the first woman and person of color to hold the position.

In a statement released Monday night, Walsh welcomed the historic moment.

History will be made tonight … We’re an extremely diverse city from different backgrounds and different nationalities and different skin colors.

Janey released her own statement wishing Walsh well and noting the “new chapter” being written in “Boston’s history.”.

Janey has not yet announced if she’ll officially run for mayor in the fall.
