After over a year of virtual or hybrid learning, the majority of Utica public schools are set to go to full in-person beginning April 12.

Time in over a year, utica schools are set to send back nearly all students starting april 12.

The board of education voted to approve superintendent bruce karam's plan.

It allows all students grades k through 8 as well as grades 11 and 12 to go back to full in person instruction five days a week.

This comes after the cdc adjusted its guidelines to recommend three feet of distance between students so long as masks are being worn.

That's less than the previous six feet recommendation.

It also follows the reopening strategies from the oneida county health department saying that two students can sit together on a bus provided that masks and face shields are worn.

Previously, only one student could sit in a row on a bus.

Board members expressed their gratitude to the students and parents in the city and hailed what they say is a monumental step for the district.

We've read the emails, we've heard the comments, and thank the graces of god, our kids are going back to school, and they're going to be healthy.

As for 9th and 10th graders at proctor, the district's administrative director steven falchi says their return to full-time in-person learning will depend on the success of the return of 11th and 12th graders.

He cites the size of proctor high school in the decision to stagger the students back to school.
