On Tuesday, the soon-to-be centenarian received an unexpected honor.

Next --- it's a story you'll only see on 44news---a tri-state veteran will soon be celebrating her milestone birthday.... and 44news reporter megan diventi -- shows us -- today she was honored -- nearly 80 years after she dedicated her life to service.

Mildred bruner--- also known as "granny b" --- is one of kind... "i've just been very grateful for the kind of life i've had.... born in smith mills--kentucky--- mildred moved to the river city as a child---where she grew up--- attended central high school---and later deaconess hospitalo school of nursing where she graduated in 19-42.... "i have 3 sisters.

Of the four girls, she chose me to go to nurses training.

So it was really my mothers idea."

A year later---at the age of 22--- mildred joined the army air corp during world war two--- serving as a nurse in mississippi.... "i just felt i needed to dedicate myself to doing something for my country."

This hometown hero---was married to the love of her life for 44 years---and raised a family of her own... but it was on tuesday---the soon to be centenarian--- received an unexpected honor... bucshon nat: "i have an american flag that has been flown over the united states capitol.

It's a brand new american flag."

U-s congressman larry bucshon- making a trip---to meet mildred himself--- nat: "thank you for your service during the war."

Another special day--to add to a century worth of memories... "to tell the truth i can't tell i'm 100.

I just wonder where all those years have gone.

Because i don't feel 100."
