Uk healthcare announces a new security measure today after the school says an armed man wearing body armor under his clothes simply walked into the emergency department.

U-k police say he had weapons on him along with guns and explosives in his car which was parked right outside the e-r entrance.

Bobbi...was tightened security already in the works before this incident?

U-k chief of police joe monroe tells me they've been working on beefing up security for the past 12 months...but the incident last month made them fast-track the process.

Now u-k will use a hand-held metal detector or wand on all visitors...and non-trauma patients when entering the e-r.

This will be in place until permanent standing metal detectors can be installed.

So far...monroe says everyone has been cooperating...some even thanking staff for the added security.

Monroe says u-k reached out to hospitals similar in size from all over...to get a better idea of what to expect and how to prepare for incidents such as last month's.

"healthcare facilities are considered a high- vulnerability target nowadays because of the lack of security for most hospitals across the country, so one of the things we're working on here is to make our staff and patients and visitors safe."

Monroe says the fact that u-k took quick action hopefully calms any fears people may have.

He also adds staff should still watch out for suspicious activity.

But...monroe says the work isn't done.

He says they're trying to identity more vulnerable points in and around the hospital to make it even safer.
