A portion of the innkeeper's tax will help boost Tippecanoe County's economy

General assembly, and that'll mean hundreds of thousands of dollars for tippecanoe county.

As we previously reported greater lafayette leaders partnered with indiana lawmakers to change how a portion of local tax money is used.

Senate bill 381 would give 20 percent of tippecanoe county's innkeepers tax to the county.

Previoulsy all of it went to prophetstown state park.

Tippecanoe county commssioner tom murtaugh says it could add up to 800- thousand dollars in tax revenue.

He says this revenue could spur growth for several years to come.

"we were the only county in the state of indiana who were sending any of their innkeepers tax to the state for a local state park."

Murtaugh says the legislation mandates the money to be used for tourism or economic development.

The commissioners will put together a plan for how that money will be used which will be submitted to the county council for approval.

He says the tax revenue no longer going to prophetstown state park will not affect the park's development.

The bill is waiting for the governor's signature.
