News of the “downvote” feature had already circulated the previous night when a select number of users received messages from Twitter.

The platform reportedly reassured users that their “downvotes” would be used to help Twitter  “understand what people think is valuable to the conversation.”.

In its official tweet announcing the “downvote” option, Twitter provided some additional “key notes” about the experiment.

The company specifically stressed that it is a “downvote,” not a “dislike button.”.

It also told users that the “downvotes” aren't public and would only be visible to you.

Twitter’s product lead, Kayvon Beykpour, mentioned in November 2020 that the company was “exploring” the implementation of a “dislike button.”
