Talon Metals Corp (TSE:TLO) (OTCMKTS:TLOFF) (FRA:TAO) has presented its plan to help build a domestic US battery supply chain to members of NAATBaat International, an advocacy group for advanced battery technology in North America. Members of NAATBaat include companies like Honda, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, CATL, Nissan and Glencore. In a presentation to the group, Talon outlined its proposal for “smart” green nickel, focusing on tracking nickel from the mine to the final product. Talon’s flagship Tamarack nickel project is in Minnesota. READ: Talon Metals reveals blockbuster intersection of over 2.3% nickel from its ongoing Tamarack drill program "When it comes to high-grade nickel deposits like the Tamarack Nickel Project, the world is out of deposits like this, specifically that are high-grade and on infrastructure,” Talon CEO Henri van Rooyen told the group as part of the company’s presentation. “I believe that there is enough nickel in the United States for nickel independence - what's missing is a USA-based refinery that could be used to convert nickel into a final product that can be used for batteries." Talon told investors that the US will need nickel to produce battery cathodes for the next generation of electric vehicles, which will boast longer ranges and higher production volumes. Currently, the only operating nickel mine in the US – the Eagle mine in Michigan – sends 100% of its nickel to Canada because the US does not have its own refinery. Once Eagle closes (expected in 2026), Talon believes that Tamarack will become the only source of high-grade nickel in the US. Green Nickel supply chain The firm is proposing the construction of a US-based refinery that would allow for an integrated Green Nickel supply chain where all steps from mining and refining of nickel to the manufacturing of batteries for electric vehicles remains within the country. "End-use customers are demanding more information about the materials in the products they buy,” van Rooyen said. “Talon is aiming to produce the first Green Nickel supply chain that is traceable and independently verified across responsible production practices and CO2 emissions. "Not only is the Tamarack deposit well-positioned geographically to feed into the North American battery supply chain, but it can leverage the high environmental, labour and human rights standards of the USA to assure customers and consumers that the nickel was produced responsibly.” The CEO added that Talon is exploring ways to use blockchain technology with a number of partners to create the first nickel production with traceable and transparent provenance in the electric vehicle supply chain. Tamarack is part of a joint venture with Rio Tinto PLC (LON:RIO) and comprises the Tamarack North project and the Tamarack South project, which spans an 18-kilometre land position with numerous high-grade intercepts outside the current resource area.
