Police: Man shoots self in Hamburg parking lot

I'm veronica jean seltzer.

And i'm tom kenny.

We'll update you on our weather..... in just a minute.

First, people shopping at hamburg pavilion in lexington tonight...thought they were going to die.

When stores were put on lockdown...they thought there was an active shooter...it turns out police were looking for a man just interested in hurting one person...himself ### hailey hayden : it was really scary eku students hailey hayden and abigail burnside were just shopping for spring break swimsuits at the hamburg pavilion target around 6 p-m thursday.

They were just coming out of the fitting room when employees started shouting.

They started screaming there's an active shooter and you have to get to the back of the store.

The girls were terrified.

They hid in the fitting rooms. they didn't know if there was a shooter outisde...or in the store.

Hailey says she called her mom...and heard a shot.

Abigail burnside: "you could just hear people screaming and running word of an active shooter spread through hamburg...but police say there was no active shooter.

Around 3 p-m officers started looking for a man who had told his family he wanted to hurt himself.

Pause police tracked his cell phone to a parking lot near target.

As officers walked up to his car, they heard a single gunshot.

Pause they found him hanging out of the car...bleeding from a gunshot wound...he gave himself.

He was rushed to uk hospital...where he was pronounced dead.

Pause as first responders worked, man o' war boulevard was shutdown for a few minutes between sir barton way and i-75.

Businesses, including target were on lockdown for about 30 minutes...only adding to fear.

We couldn't go anywhere.

We were stuck but now...as people learn what really happened...they're thinking of the man's family...and how grateful they are...to be alive.

We only report them if they involve a well-known public figure.

Or if the death has an impact on the public.

Since this one occurred at a popular shopping center... and affected traffic.... we are reporting it.
