Tonight for the sentinel faithful as their cheerleaders and dance team just gave us tonight's intro on big sky friday nights... this evening it was homecoming for the spartans... a perfect night for football as they took on crosstown rival hellgate... the opening drive of the game went well for the spartans... culminating here as quarterback rylan ortt connects with brandon morley and the senior wide receiver gets into the endzone... sentinel takes the quick 7-0 lead... jumping to the 2nd qtr now with the score 17-0... this time ortt will keep it himself on a little read option... finding room down the right side for a 14-yard scoring scamper... sentinel ups their advantage to 24-0... and on their very next drive now... with 40 seconds remaining in the first half it's ortt buying extra time in the backfield... and he's been saving his paychecks because he buys a lot of extra time here... finally finding nick germer on the pass and the senior receiver dives inside the pylon for six... sentinel cruises tonight 45-6 the final in kalispell tonight the glacier wolfpack were looking for a second straight win hosting great falls high for homecoming... glacier led 18-13 at halftime and although this game was tight until the finish the 'pack are able to get the home win 37-34... wolfpack senior running back and homecoming king drew turner had three touchdowns 215 yards rushing this evening... glacier is now 2-4 on the season... they'll play at helena capital next week... in other 'aa' action this week things got going a little early with thursday night football last night in missoula... that's where the 4-2 big sky eagles battled against the 3-2 flathead braves from kalispell..
We'll pick it up in the second quarter tie game at 7...quarterbac k levi janacaro looks like he's going to take off and run but sets his feet and drops in a dime for ben maehl for janacaro's second touchdown pass of the ballgame..this one put the eagles up 13 to 7 after the missed extra point.
2nd half now...flathead missed an opportunity to score before the half and when you're against levi janacaro that's a bad idea...now janacaro using his feet he'll escape the pocket and trot in for the score... after the missed 2 point conversion the score was 19 to 7 in favor of the eagles.
Flathead knocking on the door... taylor morton on the quarterback keeper....the ball is jarred loose at the goal line...austin demars there to recover the fumble and it might not have been how the braves drew it up, but it's a touchdown to make it a one possession game.
Big sky went onto win last night 33 to 20..
Moving to class 'a' football from tonight now... a good matchup in butte between southwest conference rivals... the 3-2 butte central maroons trying to take down the 5-1 hamilton broncs... hamilton takes charge three minutes into the quarter... quarterback carson rostad hits cameron rothie for a 30-yard touchdown... hamilton strikes first...they'd go up 7 to nothing.
But b-c would answer... with just under five minutes left in the quarter...a quick handoff to ryan moodry and he finds paydirt... the maroons would tie it at seven after the bruising touchdown run... but just two minutes later...back come the broncs... rostad hands it off to bridger bauder...and he goes untouched into the end zone... hamilton would miss the p-a-t...that would make the score13- 7... moving ahead to the second quarter...less than three minutes on the clock... rostad rolls to his left tosses it up to tyler chouinard... chouinard goes up to make the catch...and falls forward into the end zone... the broncs go up 20-7 and hamilton would go on to win this game 40-19..
"you're watching big sky friday nights, only on nbc montana."
That was the florence falcons cheer squad...the falcons had a big matchup tonight with the undefeated eureka lions.
A beautiful night in the bitterroot valley..the state champions from eureka taking on florence.
Quarterback garrett graves was picked off on the lions first drive...but then graves marches his offense down the field... jake kindel punches it in to put the lions up 7 to nothing.
2nd quarter action now....brenton pluid fields the punt....he'll only have to make one cut and nobody's going to catch him...the senior takes it 70 yards to the house...for the second special teams touchdown of the night for the lions...they also recovered a muffed punt in the end zone earlier in the ballgame..they went up 21-8 here after the extra point.
Eureka took a 28 to 8 lead into the locker room and on their first posession of the second half...its the future montana grizzly garrett graves...puts the falcons defense in a spin cycle..bounce s off a couple defenders and he will finish it off with the touchdown....t he lions remain unbeaten as they win it tonight 56-20... in other area football action from tonight class 'a' scores: columbia falls 51 ronan 6 frenchtown 15 dillon 32 in other class 'a' finals from tonight: polson 16 whitefish 10 stevensville 31 corvallis 20 first league win for stevi class 'b' scores: loyola 54 anaconda 14 townsend 7 bigfork 13 class 'c' 8-man scores: mission12 plains34 seeley-swan 16 flint creek 62 that does it for our high school football tonight... but next on big sky friday nights we'll dig into saturday's college matchups for the grizzlies and the bobcats... we'll be right back... it's been an up and down start to the season to say the least for montana football... with the biggest downer of all being the loss of their starting quarterback in the third game of the year... but despite the tough luck... reese phillips continues to be a source of information and inspiration to help this team... on september 16th, montana starting quarterback reese phillips was lost for the season.this past saturday, the transfer quarterback now in his fifth year of college football was forced to watch his team play on tv for the first time in his career.
"it's never fun.that's the first game i've ever missed in college, even my redshirt year.
I've always been to every game and it definitely wasn't fun.
It's hard to be laying in bed and not be able to walk around and watch your best friends play ball."
Even though phillips is no longer able to take the field himself, his memory has.in each game since his injury, teammate keenan curran has taken the field with a #11 flag to honor phillips.
"it means more than i could even put into words.especially the road game.it was actually a surprise.
My brother made the flag and it was a surprise for eastern and when he ran for eastern i didn't know it was happening.so that was cool and for keenan to carry it, you know that's one of my best friends.it definitely means a lot to me and it's just a testimony to how close this team is."
Phillips continues to have a big impact on the team.this week he was officially named an undergraduate student coach for the team, using his experience to help the team and young redshirt quarterback gresch jensen.
"he's the best young quarterback that i've ever been around since i've been in college.
I've talked to him a little bit before the game just as far as nerves go an stuff but he's a good leader in that sense.he doesn't show it and that's why everyone is so confident in him."
"we were on the road and we had a text from him in our offensive meeting and i think our players want to play harder to put a smile on his face.he's a big leader and he's not going away.he's going to be involved with our team the entire season."
