Several service groups in the community are stepping up to help during the pandemic.

The Lafayette Lions Club is helping local restaurants who have been hit hard by COVID-19, while Lafayette Optimist Noon Club is creating online reading videos for kids.

18's meredith hackler shows us how two tippecanoe county-based groups are helping industries that have felt the impact from the virus the most.

The covid-19 pandemic has hit the local restaurant industry hard.

"restaurants right now are struggling and any organization or association that can reach out to us so that we can help feed the front lines or the health care industry is amazing."- karen hirsh-cooper owner of outpost catering that's why the lafayette lions club started an initiative called feeding the front lines.

The organization purchases large ords from locally owned and operated restaurants and delivers them to front workers.

"we wanted to purchase food from them and they have been really gracious and thankful.

They pre-package the food and then they deliver it or we do if they aren't able and we deliver it to our health careproviders."- diane haby while the lions club is helping local restaurant owners, the lafayette optimist noon club is helping educate kids..

By having community leaders record online story time videos.

"we thought this would be a great opportunity to fill the gap by having members of our community who aren't able to engage with students the same way as usual right now be able to read to the students to, to provide to those needs."-justin major lafayette optimist noon club the organization wanted to take the burden of encouraging kids to read off teachers who have had to change their entire lesson plans due to the virus.

"we know some kids don't have access to books especially with the libraries being closed down or not accessible at the moment so any ways we can get kids reading and developing those language skills is our primary goal."-justin major lafayette optimist noon club meredith hackler news 18.

By the end of this week the lions club will have delivered 500 meals.
