Organizers called off the June 2 protest in front of the council chambers because of threats circulating on social media.

Not taking threats of violence against planned rallies lightly.

Action news now reporter kristian lopez is live in downtown chico....what does the police chief have to say about keeping people safe during these events.

Hayley there was supposed to be a rally happening here right now but organizers decided to call it off for safety reasons.

I talked to chief michael o'brien and he says police are usually in contact with rally organizers to ensure everyone's safety.

Chief o'brien says a lot of information floats around social mediaã especially during times like these at 4 we told you the organizers called off today's rally because of threats circulating on social media.

Chief o'brien says they are asking anyone who receives threats on social media to report it so they can look into it and make sure everyone is safe.

We have contact to the organizers, we reach out, and sometimes these events are made by people who may not want police contact, we understand, but we ask anyone who is hosting an event to get ahold of us so we can ensure their safety and the safety of our community it's our job to keep everyone safe, everyone has a first amendment right to assembly and freedom of speech we want to protect that but at the same time we are not going to allow the city to be vandalized and looted.

He says they have not received any specific reports of threats but will investigate if they do.

Chief o'brien says events in chico are usually peaceful and they expect that to continue..

As of right now today's event is cancelled.
