Powerful Guns Stolen From Sheriff Deputy's Car

2 people are in custody after, as part of a string of car break ins in the Shoals, stole a shot gun and assault rifle from a Colbert County Sheriff Deputy's vehicle.

New details tonight -- 2 people are in custody after a string of car break-ins in the shoals.

During one of the crimes -- a shot gun and assault rifle were taken from a colbert county sheriff deputy's vehicle on luanne street in muscle shoals last night.

Waay31's breken terry spoke with the sheriff to find out what's being done to make sure this doesn't happen again.

Look live: the colbert county sheriff told me his deputy insists his patrol car was locked.

Muscle shoals police told me other people's whose cars were broken into said the same thing.

<williamson- there were other break-ins that night and also seemed to be no forced entry.

Sheriff frank williamson showed me the types of guns that were taken from his deputies patrol rig.

They were an m16 - which is similar to an ar-15 - and a 12 gauge shotgun.

Williamson- i believe that they were using unlock tools.

Williamson told me he believes his deputy when he said he locked his doors - but did say this deputy's vehicle didn't have gun rack with a lock.

Williamson- i think in this particular one we didn't so we are recalling all of the ar's so we can make sure everyone has one in their vehicle.

Williamson said had the rack been there - the guns could have been double locked, so a thief couldn't take them even if they broke into the car.

Williamson- you got a lock on the door then the racks have a lock on them as well.

You can't get those open unless you know how.

Look live tag: williamson said out of their fleet of vehicles most every one has a rack in it.

In the meantime - they will store the larger guns at the sheriff's office until every deputies car has a rack.

In the shoals bt waay31.

> the sheriff said they have alerted all agencies to be on the lookout for the assault rifle that's still missing.

It was entered as stolen into a national police
