Local organizations helping feed SE Fort Wayne residents

A group of local organizations are coming together to give away free BBQ meals to support families on Fort Wayne's southeast side.

In the first hour of the event, they handed out over half of their 200 meals.

Throughout the month of october, local organizations are coming together to help feed families once a week on fort southeast side.

Fox caleb saylor has more on how this food is helping those struggling through the pandemic?

Ty simmons with the human agricultural co-op, alon with big momma kitchen, the united way, and other community organizations came together to organize the giveaway, something simmons thinks is needed during this time when money might be tight for some families.

Eals at a restaurant cost you ten to fifteen dollars.

So, if a family of three can come up and get thirty to forty-five dollars worth of food, i mean it relieves a lot of stress, you know, where you can have a nice meal and enjoy it.

The time bonita powell and her car got their three meals, over 120 of the 200 meals in total were already given away.

She says even though she had to w appreciative for the support.

Am so grateful because someone can even get out of the nursing home to get meals like this, and i just so blessed.

Group held a similar food giveaway in the summer and will continue every monday for the month of october supporting their neighbors with food.

Simmons says part of the reason he organized the event was he saw other parts of town receiving help with getting people through the pandemic ?they were having covid testing.

They were allowed for rent assistance and unfortunately, our side of town doe get the privilege to get all of those services.

Even though they might be available to us, but unfortun qualify don all the time.

A community effort like this goes a long way to get more people to help their community ?i pretty sure everyone else is blessed, you know, to have this type of work done in the community and then it will give encouragement to others to help out.
