Lt. Shanon Anderson will take control of the police department on Jan. 1

More than a year after oregon state university announced they were cutting ties with oregon state police-- the university has named their new top cop for their police department.

Kezi nine news reporter connor mccarthy spoke with some students on campus this evening and tells us their thoughts about this new chapter of public saftey at osu.

Matt and renee-- shannon anderson-- a liuetenant with the seattle police department-- will be osu's new police chief.

Students i spoke with say they have mixed feelings about the new police department.

But most say they hope anderson addresses racial inequality in policing.

Anderson has a long history of working in law enforcement.

She has worked for seattle police since 1992.

There she worked as a patrol officer, detective, and then in 2016 she was promoted to liuetenant.

She also served on the seattle police review board that holds officers accountable for following department policy, consitituional law, and judicial oversight.

One senior at osu says she hopes anderson will listen to minority communities at osu and their concerns about policing.

When my boyfriend and i have attended little town hall meetings you can definitely tell there a lot that needs to be done and there a lot of minority students who need to be listened to in order to move forward.

Hubbard also says she hopes anderson and the new police departemnt goes through a bias training so tbey can understand the community they're serving.

Matt and renee-- i did reach out to anderson for an interview but she was unable today.

Osu's contract with osp ends on december 31st-- then on january first--- the university's new police department will start patrolling.
