Common council approves term limits
The Utica Common Council approved term limits during its last meeting.

Common council approved a new term limits ordinance....but the legislation wont go into effect until 2022.

Utica elected officials...that's the mayor, common council president and comptroller will be held to only eight consecutive years in any role.

The ordinance also includes an exception for an elected official seeking re-election under the 2017 local law extending terms to 12 consecutive years.

An individual can seek the same office again aer takingne term off once they've reached the term limit.

The change won't go into effect until after the next local elections in 2021, the effective date is jan.

1, 2022.
