Arrack, a traditional alcoholic beverage that was banned in Kerala, India in 1996, has resurfaced legally in Canada and the US through the efforts of enterprising Malayali immigrants. Branded as Mandakini and Taika, these arrack brands have gained popularity among those who have tried them. Mandakini has already won an award and both brands are being sold under the category of indigenous Indian liquor. The arrack-makers are now urging the Kerala government to lift the ban, with supporters arguing that legal distillation would benefit local farmers and create jobs.
