Demand in Rajya Sabha for SEBI-like regulator for social media platforms to check deepfakes

BJP MP Sushil Kumar Modi demanded a SEBI-like regulatory body for social media platforms to curb the threat of deepfakes and synthetic videos. He highlighted that these videos pose a threat to democracy and that disinformation is spreading due to a lack of tools for verification. Women are particularly vulnerable to deepfakes, with an app circulating that can generate nude pictures of fully dressed individuals. Additionally, digitally altered faces of celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan are being used for promoting betting platforms.
