College football and today in missoula griz fans got their first taste of the new 2017 edition... montana hoping for a rebound year this fall after falling short of the postseason last year... under center for montana today it was senior quarterback reese phillips making his first college start this afternoon... the grizzlies battled with valparaiso for the first test of the season... 1st qtr action with montana leading 7-6... phillips finds samori toure on the pass... and the redshirt freshman gets a big gainer of 31 yards for montana... now the ball would come free at the end of the play but he was ruled down so no fumble... montana settled for a field goal on the drive to go up 10-6... moving to the 2nd qtr now with the same score... but valpo threatening as tramone duncan evades pressure in the backfield to keep the play alive... and then fires downfield for donny navarro... and the 5-foot-9 freshman comes down with the touchdown... crusaders take a 13-10 lead over montana... but in the 2nd half montana would kick things in gear... once again duncan under pressure in the backfield... and this time the play doesn't work out so well... the pass picked off by josh sandry as the sophomore out of bigfork makes a big play for the turnover... and later in the 3rd qtr... griz up by four as phillips throws off of play action and toure is wide open for the touchdown... montana stretches their lead to 11 points... and the grizzlies would coast from there today... 45-23 your final score... the season also kicked off for montana state today... however the bobcats are on the road and that's was a late kickoff tonight that got going at 8:30... m-s-u is at washington state this evening... a very tough opening matchup as the cougars enter the season ranked 24th in the a-p... and so far give the cats some credit for hanging tough... this game is just entering the second half of action and it's a 14-0 score right now favoring wazzu... we'll have the final score of this game on our website... n-b-c montana-dot- com... as soon as the game wraps up... and we'll have a recap with highlights tomorrow on our news at five... last but not least for our college football teams today... the montana western bulldogs were also playing under the lights tonight... and like the bobcats they were playing up a level... against a team from the big sky conference no-less... tonight the bulldogs were big underdogs against weber state and things got ugly in a hurry down in ogden, utah... the last time these teams met in 2008 weber won 62-6... as you can see tonight was even worse... with m-s-u losing by a final of 76-0 this evening... the wildcats finished with 485 yards of total offense compared to 147 for the dawgs... western will get back to frontier conference football next weekend at eastern oregon... finally tonight the missoula osprey have just seven games left in the regular season before they start playoff action on september 10th... tonight in great falls the o's raced out to a 7-0 lead by the 5th inning and held on to win by a final of 7- 4... at the plate... missoula's terence connelly went 3-for-4 with a homer and tallied four rbis... osprey starting pitcher edgar martinez gave up just one run through 6 innings on the mound to get the win... with tonight's win the birds have moved to just one game back of the voyagers for first place in the northern second half standings... missoula and great falls will face off again tomorrow afternoon for the finale of this quick 2- game set... that does it for your sports this evening... we'll be right back...
