Citizens Law Enforcement Academy

Sgt.

Roy Hoskins joins us to tell us how you can get a look inside how the SJPD do their jobs.

Into the 60s but a chance for rain starting on sunday and jodie.

>> thank you.

Mike.

Well sarnl roadway sergeant sergeant roadway hoskins and i are ready for spring.

We will tell you about the citizens law enforcement academy.

This is such a great program.

This is something that has gone on for a number of years in conjunction with the st.

Joseph police department.

This is my fourth year to have the privilege of helping to organize this and coordinate it.

It's a blast.

It's easily the most time consuming and labor intensive thing i do all year but has a huge reward for me.

>> you spent time in the classroom and time out in a car.

>> yeah, you get to ride along with either a st.

Joe patrol officer or a buchanan county deputy on the road responding to live calls.

You get to see what that officer sees and feels and what they're going through as they respond to the call.

You also get to go to the city range and shoot one of our duty weapons with live ammunition.

Crawl around in the bar cat vehicle.

See the snipers.

>> do we get to see the inside of the jail as well?

>> yes, when you tour the sheriff's side you get to see the jail.

What do you feel people are getting out of this?

We know it's cool and awesome.

What are they getting out of it?

Do they finish the program and you feel like they have really just learned what you do and respect you more?

>> it's a 2 way street.

So many people get their idea of police work from one hour tv shows.

It's really not too terribly too much like that.

It gives them an inside view of what we do.

We have csi and family crimes.

They get to hear about it and experience it first hand.

We get to have a really candid low key conversation back and forth with people.

I will get to know everybody in the class.

They will get to know me.

I'm a very candid open, honest person.

Whatever questions they ask, i will give them an interesting answer and will be truthful.

We get that and it's not really, we don't want to make it adversarial but people are allowed to voice their opinions and have constructive conversation.

When they leave, i want them to say, i didn't realize that went into the job.

>> right.

What exactly went into the job.

>> absolutely.

We want to put the information up on the screen so people know they can still register.

>> we have about 20 spots yet.

>> it's march 25th through may 19th.

Every tuesday 6:00 to 9:30 p.m.

And the applications are due by march 13.

I don't know, what we should say, not criticize but have opinions, you may want to go down and sign up and see if what you perceive is true is actually true.

>> for most people, it's enlightening and what they came in thinking about police work is usually not completely true.

>> it's good for building relationships for sure.

>> that is the bottom
