Oxford mayor, residents react to first case of coronavirus in Lafayette County.

The health department confirmed over 50 new cases.

Including one in winston... tippah... and lafayette county... w-t-v-a's kayla thompson spoke with oxford residents and mayor tannehill about how they feel now that covid-19 is in their county... ."

Residents in oxford i spoke to today... say they will be a little more cautious now that the coronavirus is here... start pkg "while today is the firs time we can positively confirm the coronavirus in our area, we have known this day was coming and we have prepared for it for weeks."

This is the video mayor robyn tannehill posted on facebook this morning to alert residents that covid-19 is here... the department of health had not confirmed a case in the area until after she posted the video.

"unfortunately the department of healths website is not being updated as quickly as they are making calls and in my opinion it would be irresponsible for me to have that information and not let the citizens know so i felt like waiting for a chart to be updated didn't make much sense."

(vo includes screenshot of ms department of health website without lafayette county on it.) and folks here were glad that mayor tannehill did not wait to release that information... "this is something that has never happened ever and she is doing an incredible job of keeping us informed and making decision so that our town can get past this quicker and supporting businesses so that it's good for everyone."

Some residents say knowing that a case is in the county doesn't scare them... "probably gonna sanitize my hands a little more i'm probably gonna do the same thing i mean i'm 20 so if i get it i should live ya know."

No matter how residents feel about the news...they say they will do what what they have to in order to flatten the curve of cases.

"with it we being officially announced people may take it seriously and actually stay home and flatten the curve so we are doing curb-side pick up it adds a little normalcy to our life right now."

Mayor tannehill says she knows the people of oxford will band together to overcome covid-19... "the city of oxford is so blessed to have department heads that are all ultimate professionals who have had these plans in place for years to our police department and our fire department and first responders who have been going through drills and practicing these things for so long.

You know theres no guide book on this so we're all winging it alot of the time, but we're all pulling the rope
