"We are not in the clear yet..." Vigo County Health Departments warnings about COVID-19

Indiana is coming up on its many peaks in the next few weeks.

Plus, why aren't we seeing numbers of recovery?

The Vigo County Health Department breaks all of this down.

For all hoosiers.

Indiana could see its peak in covid-19 *cases very soon.

That's according to state and local leaders.

It's encouraging news... but it doesn't mean the fight is anywhere near over... news 10's sarah lehman is live in our newsroom tonight.

She explains what experts say will happen in the next few days..

Plus... she maps out "why" we've seen the number of cases rise... but we haven't seen the number of "recoveries" do the same.

So here's how things break down right now.

Indiana health officials say today and tomorrow they anticipate seeing the highest number of people in hospitals to be tested.

After that -- in about 10 days we could see the highest number of confirmed cases.

Then -- in may we may see our peak of deaths from the coronavirus.

Roni elder with the vigo county health department tells us what we could see locally in the coming days.

This week -- models are saying indiana could reach it's first peak.

"so what we're thinking we're gonna see a lot of people in the hospital today, tomorrow which means more testing to be done which might result in a lot more positives in the next 10 days."

Roni elder with the vigo county health department says the models are saying the peak for deaths in indiana is going to hit in may.

"hopefully that is something that doesn't reach the numbers that they think it will /// but we could see the last death of coronavirus up until august."

So -- elder asks everyone to continue to social distance... wash your hands... and wear face masks -- to help keep all the numbers low.

Because everything with this virus is two weeks behind.

"know that we're not in the clear yet."

More people in here -- means more covid 19 case numbers in the coming weeks.

But what about recoveries?

The vigo county health department says -- that number is harder to pin down!

"at this point the recovered cases is kind of a gray area /// we don't wanna put out a bunch of recovered numbers that we're not sure if they really fit the guidelines well."

The guidelines from the c-d-c -- say if you have two consecutive days worth of testing with negative results or three days without a fever and seven days post symptoms. which elder says is hard to track right now.

Giving recovery numbers at this point doesn't give a good picture of what's going on in our county because of how few numbers we have and how few people were able to get tested in the beginning."

Elder says right now they are waiting on more guidance from the state when it comes to the number of recovered.

Of course we will continue to follow this and tell you as soon as we know more.
