Food carts turn into 'disinfection vehicles' in Afghanistan

Afghan food vendor Marzia Sikandar is dressed head-to-toe in a personal protective suit as she drives her food cart down the street - but instead of dishing out burgers like she used to, she's now providing hand washing services, spraying people with disinfectant and handing out face masks.

Libby Hogan has more.

Once a food cart dishing out hamburgers on the streets of Afghanistan's city Kabul now repurposed as a disinfection service on wheels.

Marzia Sikandar is part of a grassroots handwashing service: (SOUNDBITE) (Dari) SOLAR-POWERED DISINFECTION CART OPERATOR, FORMER FOOD CART VENDOR, MARZIA SIKANDAR, SAYING: "We have sanitising materials and masks in our cart, and we distribute 60 to 70 masks a day to the people." The carts are run by solar power and are a community initiative to boost public hygiene.

The effort is organized by social enterprise, The Banu's Kitchen, meaning Lady's Kitchen.

It was founded by Farhad Wajdi to support women to achieve financial independence in a traditionally male-dominated profession.

In Kabul, about 50 women usually run the 25 food carts, but now that number has nearly doubled.

The government has also provided funds to convert the carts and purchase supplies.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) FOUNDER OF BANU'S KITCHEN WHICH PROVIDED THE CARTS, FARHAD WAJDI, SAYING: "As you know, Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world, and most of the population cannot afford the sanitising products which have higher prices, so our mission is to reach to these underprivileged families."
