UC freezes tuition in light of coronavirus pandemic.

The 2020-2021 academic year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Newschannel2's chelsea sherrod has the story.

Utica college students will now be paying the same amount for tuition this fall as they did last year.

Jeffrey gates: we certainly recognize that this covid-19 pandemic has created some financial uncertainty for our families and we want to do everything that we can to ensure that students have access to a first class utica college education.

In 2015, the college did a tuition reset which reduced tuition for undergraduate students which is now at about $21,500.

This year, the tuition freeze goes across all campuses, graduate or undergraduate, including the college nursing programs in liverpool,ny and florida.

Jeffrey gates: i'm worried about increase costs it's not about the cost because a lot of students have a four year plan and in terms of how they're going to fund their educational experience but we're trying everything that we can to mitigate any of the additional pressures that may be on a student or on their family.

So tuition costs will not change for the next year, but what about the cost for room and board if students are allowed to return to campus?

Jeffrey gates: those costs are going to go up like they normally do but the biggest cost for students is the tuition costs were doing some other things that we are putting the finishing touches on and will announce those in terms of lowering the cost of textbooks as well as creating some other efficiencies for students in terms of the overall cost.

Utica college is also offering summer courses for current students that are about $200 per course plus fees.

Students can catch up to graduate on time or get ahead possibly graduate earlier.

Jeffrey gates: we have allowed families up until june 1 to make their college choice so that's also helping our recruitment efforts this year i think this is really going to help a lot of our families with the added pressure of college.

Reporting in utica, i'm chelsea sherrod, newschannel 2.
