The Department of Motor Vehicles is not open to the public, but is processing transactions.

Is not open to the public, but is processing transactions.

Newschannel 2's kirk tupaj tells us what you can and can't accomplish at the dmv.

The department of motor vehicles is currently closed to the public until may 15th, however the dmv is still conducting some transactions.

The dmv is not processing driver's licenses or holding any drivers testing, but you can register your vehicle, and complete paperwork that doesn't require in- person transactions.

I spoke with herkimer county clerk sylvia rowan who tells me the herkimer county dmv has been swamped.

.

None .

None sot: sylvia rowan, herkimer county clerk each county has decided upon how to handle this covid 19 situation, and i decided along with the county legislature that we could stay open, not to the public, but stay open to try to do transactions for the public.

Since the state dmv in albany is completely closed, the phone calls in herkimer have been nearly impossible to keep up with, and the workload continues to pile up, but that's not the case in oneida county.

Sot: sandra deperno, oneida county clerk we're all caught up.

I have very good staff.

They're all caught up yeah.

We're ready to open.

As soon as all these things are implemented, and the governor says ok, yeah, we're ready to open.

Sot: kirk tupaj but here in herkimer, they're getting customers as far away as rochester.

Sot: sylvia rowan, herkimer county clerk the phone is continuously ringing.

We'd had them as far as montgomery, and schoharie, otsego, madison, jefferson, lewis, oneida, monroe, and chemung.

So why is herkimer county getting so much more work than oneida county?

Sandra deperno explains.

Sot: sandra deperno, oneida county clerk it depends on how much dealer work you get.

You see we weren't allowed to do that at first and then they opened it up that we could do dealer work.it depends on how much staffing they have too.

I don't know how many people she has workingr madison county.

U know having le 2-3 peoplcompad to maybe1&yeah a difference.

Herkimer county recently lost 2 motor vehicle clerks and a supervisor bringing the staff down from 7 to 4.

Tonight at six we'll explain how that's going to affect transactions once the governor gives the ok to open up.

In herkimer, i'm kirk tupaj reporting for newschannel
