Prisons can be hot spots for coronavirus... to keep inmates safe... some families are calling for the compassionate release of their imprisoned loved ones..

Kimt news 3's isabella basco joins us live now with the story of one inmate and his family, it's a kimt news 3 exclusive the federal medical center here in rochester has 677 inmates.

All of them have unique stories to tell during this pandemic.

One inmate?

Victor hernandez spent almost four years here due to drug trafficking charges.

He has a hole in his lung... so his family fought hard for him to be released.

Xxx "i think my dad would be one of those vulnerable cases, if he caught it, i don't see him surviving."

Jaclyn garcia is the daughter of victor hernandez.

Her father was sentenced to serve 13 years in the lockup for a drug trafficking conviction.

Hernandez has en?stage liver disease.

At the federal medical center?

His prognosis was grim.

"it got to the point where he was be?ridden, had tubes through his back, just really, really sick and needed a lot of care."

Her father sought compassionate release twice... the requests denied both times.

Finally?

In februar?

His third request was granted.

"i believe that the things that did change for the third time was covi?19."

Garcia defends her father's return to the "real world."

She says it's not easy to get compassionate release.

Says "compassionate release grants are the exception's really just tied to having the human right to die or to pass with your family versus dying alone in prison."

Hernandez is back home in california?

With plenty of support.

"he's in our care and we're able to take care of him the way that a person who's really sick and dying should be taken care of."

It's a tale of perseverence... unfailing optimism and fighting for family.

Jaclyn says her dad is stable and getting care in california.

He's still sick but he has all the care he needs with his family by his side.
