The question now - how might the coronavirus pandemic impact those forced into a shelter during an emergency?

Action news now reporter jafet serrato is live in chico... jafet will shelters operate differently?

Yes... they will look*an* operate differently.

Here's how.

In most cases... people are packed into one large shelter space.

But under stay- at-home ordersã the red cross plans to house people in hotels so everyone can isolate.

If that is*no* an optionãthe red cross will continue to house people at local fairgrounds or high schools.

But agency reps say they will be more limited... placing fewer than 50 people inside each shelter.

And... each evacuee will be at least six feet apart from one another.

I talked with a red cross executive director about emergency preps: "everyone one of our clients will have face masks.

Before anyone goes into our general shelter, they will go through screening through nurses maybe through public health assistance and from the county that we will have."

Areas where people can get food will also be spaced out to maintain social distancing the red cross has assured me that if shelters are in capacity then they will actively find more buildings to house people.
