Jessamine County schools found a creative alternative to a graduation ceremony

It's graduation day for hundreds of seniors in jessamine county.

Because of the coronavirus..they aren't walking to the podium today to receive their diploma.

Instead...abc 36's austin miller shows us how the county got creative with this year's ceremony.

There's still caps and gowns this year..

But the traditional ceremony is on hold in 2020.

So instead of that formal ceremony..

Jessamine county schools and students found a creative alternative..

A graduation parade complete with a police escort..

A greeting from firefighters..

And a helicopter flyover.

Matt moore, jcs superintendent- trt 12 "i love the fact that our students came up with some really creative ideas.

We really helped them turn that into a reality.

You can see a lot of excitement out here.

That's exactly what we wanted on a graduation day."

That excitement started this afternoon with the providence school.

Parents..

Friends and family lined up along the airstrip at rj corman railroad group..

Including angela stroberg..

Who watched her daughter accomplish something she never did.

Angela stroberg, daughter graduated friday- trt 11 "it means a lot to me.

I didn't finish school.

Her being able to do it and me not being able to do it means a lot to me because it's something that i've always wanted."

Even with all the smiles friday..

For a small school like providence..

Today still isn't the same for teachers... who didn't get to share the moment the way they wanted to with a group of kids they've watched grow into adults.

Lynn byers, youth service intercoordinator- trt 11 "the ability to give each other hugs, the ability to shake their hands and just to tell them face- to-face how much it means to us to see them graduate and move on with their lives."

But... traditional or not..

For stroberg..

Friday's ceremony captured the spirit of graduation.

Angela stroberg, daughter graduated friday- trt 08 "i don't see a difference.

Everybody's here, regardless of sit- down or stand-up.

Everybody's here.

That's what matters."

In jessamine county..
