Alicia says: "the announcement comes on juneteenth today a holiday that's been celebrated for over a century as african-americans honor their history and celebrate black culture" daniel says: "we would be remiss if we were silent and stood on the sidelines on this issue" linda says: "it also was a beautiful coincidence that it's on juneteenth and so that was a nice convergence and we thought it was most appropriate to do it today" in addition to the statement that was released, sou has also added a "black lives matter" poster along siskiyou blvd.
Linda says: "we wanted to make a visual statement that we are endorsing, we do support, that black lives do indeed matter" sou board of trustees have pledged to take action, creating the equity, diversity and inclusion leadership team.
In the past, sou has made changes to add diversity and inclusion, including the construction of a larger, more accessible multicultural center that will be finished this summer -- even so, the board and president schott feel more needs to be done.
Daniel says: "we have so much to learn and we have to be cognizant of the voices that we aren't hearing, the people that are not at the table right now and just be aware of those voices and have a willingness to listen and learn" alicia says: "another statement being made today is from the oregon shakespeare festival also found here in ashland.
