Change could be coming to the river city--- the latest health crisis being debated -- racism.

We go now to 44news reporter erran huber --- he is live in evansville tonight -- where city council took action.

Things got heated.

As a resolution on race became a flashpoint.

Tonight, you had a chance to help us.

You didn't do it.

Now you're going to pass this document, with no statistical data.

No action plan, no strategic plan, no teeth in it.

Just a whole lot of we want to declare a crisis.

Hell, this has been a crisis all my life!

You didn't have to declare it.

You could've called me at home.

Yes, there's a crisis.

Tonightmid contentious public comment i had people lined up an hour before i started.

All my food events, because they needed food for themselves and for their pets.

So for you to say that that's ridiculous.

"we're talking about racism and you're talking about personal issues.

"excuse me, i'm getting to that."

And amid council members taking verbal shots at each other the city leaders voted to approve a resolution calling racism a public health crisis.

But it was not unanimous i cannot support this resolution because it goes against all that i believe about this city.

Our community has a rich diversity of people.

These people from different backgrounds and ethnicities own businesses, they serve on important boards and they have leadership roles in our most prominent corporations.

This evidence doesn't support systematic racism."

The measure-- sparking public calls for fewer words and more action you said that this further divides us.

Sir, we're divided.

Facts are facts.

There is a percentage disparity in our covid cases between our african american community and our caucasian community.

Accepting that fact does not divide us.

We're already divided by what's occuring in reality.
