Mayor Henry started the Blue Star Banner initiative seven years ago to honor local Fort Wayne residents that were deployed.

For the seventh year in a row, mayor tom henry decorates the city of fort wayne, and for a good purpose, too.

The blue star banner initiative aims to publicly recognize service members who are deployed.fox 55's brianna dahlquist has the story.

Cathy fisher:"being a mother, driving by looking at it you just get teary eyed."

Cathy fisher's son michael may have served overseas but part of him was always in fort wayne ... thanks to the blue banner initiative.

Karen richards with the mayor's office says this initiative is so necessary at a time like this.

Karen richards:"we would not have the freedom we have to do what we do here if they were not over there doing what they're doing"richards says it's really for both the soldier and their families.

Karen richards:"the families are also deployed with them.

It's not just that one person, but it's their families that are back home."

Nearly 100 military members have been recognized so far.

Fisher calls it the ultimate honor ..

And a sweet reminder that no matter where he is he's always just a short drive away.
