Umpqua community college is making budget cuts because of the coronavirus pandemic& putting the jobs of some faculty and staff on the line.

Kezi 9 news reporter evita garza shows us how the college is moving forward& despite these tough decisions.

Trt: 1:40 00:00 take lower like many colleges and universities, it been a rough year for umpqua community college.?covid-19 has impacted us from every area of operation?

13 faculty and staff jobs had to be cut by the college board of directors.

That because they are expecting big budget cuts from the state.

Phoner:?ucc budget is roughly 50% state allocation, 30% tuition and fees and 20% property taxes?

That meant board members had to make some painful choices to make up for those lost funds.

Administrative and classified staff as well as faculty saw the biggest cuts.

And board chair steve loosley tell me it was an extremely tough decision.

Phoner:?as a board member, we are making decisions that impact people everyday lives.

You know, we know that these are real people and real families?

But, loosley says theye also trying to move forward.

00:56 evita:?as you can see, the ucc campus is quiet and empty right now.

And, it going to be this way as the school continues with remote learning through the summer and fall.

But, faculty say theye doing everything they can to make sure remote learning is better now than it was before?

With summer term just around the corner, spokesperson tiffany coleman says faculty are hard at work putting virtural lession plans together.

And, she says theye working to bring a few students back in the fall& for a few in- person lab sessions.?it been tough for all of us.

So i know theye working on innovative ways to engage with students?

Right now, it still unclear if or when ucc will bring their students back full time.
