Basketball player who was supposed to start his freshman year at college this week ...is dead....lexington's 20th homicide victim this year.

Lexington police say 18-year-old mykel waide was one of three people shot around 1:30 this morning.

Police say the other two victims are going to be okay.

Officers say the initial call was for a large disorder with shots fired on newtown pike near the residence inn.

They say that's where they found waide and the other shooting victims....they say they don't know yet what led to the shootings because the survivors and witnesses aren't cooperating with investigators.

Abc 36's bobbi mcswine talked to one of waide's former coaches...who says waide was more than just a player.

### "when i think about kel i think about family."

Jay bordas is the assistant basketball coach at tates creek high school..and his wife...meredith...is the assistant principal.

Over the years...he says his family and waide's practically merged...and their love for mykel grew.

"he would go and help me coach my 8-year-old son's basketball games.he never even thought about missing one.

He would go to my daughter's dance recitals."

Police say waide was shot to death early sunday morning in lexington.

Social media has been flooded with memories and condolences...as those who knew him reflect on what he meant to them.

Tates creek's basketball team also made a post...saying waide was a role model.

Bordas says waide was excited to start college at the university of louisville.

"he facetimed with my wife all day yesterday asking questions.

The anxiousness, the excitement of starting a new path."

But instead of giving waide another day of motivational speeches...bordas and his wife had the heartbreaking job of packing-up his dorm room at u of l.

"he was going to major in business and he was going to be a success wherever that took him."

Bordas' wife tearfully read waide's last message to her..."i love you"...and "i'll call you tomorrow."

The call never came and never will.

It is a sudden and heavy loss.

"he had the biggest heart in the world.

At the drop of a hat he'd drop anything for anyone he cared about, and i think that's the thing that everyone will remember the most - how loyal he was."

Bordas asks the community to keep supporting waide's family and the tates creek community...and honor lways thank us for stuff we might do for him, b guarantee you that he did more for us than we ever did for him."

In lexington...bobbi mcswine...abc 36 news.

The bordas say they're raising money to help waide's family pay for a funeral.
