From new shoes to backpacks to a fresh pack of pencils, getting ready for a new school year can be a challenge for many families financially, especially during a pandemic.

Today, local churches, businesses and organizations teamed up to help meet those needs, and kezi 9 news reporter kennedy dendy was there to tell us about the impact this will have.

For 10 years& project hope has been a source of*relief for families, as they tackle the many expenses and anxious feelings of a new school year.

Stephanie: "it's a great overwhelming experience to just receive all this wonderful giving."

But this year...that support was needed at an even*greater level.

As the pandemic has left a drastic*mark in so many areas.

Stephanie: "the financial crisis kind of had a toll on us when it happened and i think this is a great event and an opportunity for the kids to get and receive."

I spoke to a few kids today who shared some of their favorite back to school items. ty: "i got new shoes, new backpack, supplies and i got a brand new backpack and some dope glasses."

Amber: "a backpack and some nice shoes.

They're white."

Brodey: "shoes and some school supplies."

Bridge: some tell me that today was a dose of hope.

Others said that pandemic hit them hard, so knowing the community has their back makes them feel supported and encouraged as the new school year approaches quickly.

Over 90 churches, business and organizations came together.

The giveaway spanned across six different sites in lane county.

Sherry: "i'm raising my three grandsons so this is really a big help for us.

" 3,000 tickets were given out to the event.

And school districts selected families who could benefit the most.

Sherry: "i'm very thankful for what they do."
