Firefighters battle the Sweet Creek Milepost 2 fire overnight

Local fire officials have estimated the fire to be at 500 acres with 0% containment

At 11" tonight the sweet creek mile post 2 fire in mapleton is still buring and is zero percent contained.

Right now the fire is estimated to be at about 500 acres and the oregon department of forestry has officially taken over the scene.

Kezi nine news reporter connor mccarthy is live in mapleton and talked to fire officials about the fire.

Connor what's the plan tonight?

Chynna-- an official with the oregon department of forestry says their plan is to build off the progress they made during the day.

Since i've been out here along 126 i can hear chainsaws of the night crews cutting through trees.

This is video i got tonight of the fire and you can see it's very dark where the fire is burning.

Level three evacuations are still in place for hadsall road and level two for sweet creek road.

The oregon department of forestry put a level one- get ready-- evacuation order for bernhardt creek and duncan island road.

Odf spokesman-- marcus kauffman-- says fighting this fire at night gives his crews an advantage to create fire lines.

The idea is like encircling the fire with control lines to slow the spread, stop the spread.

During day shift, we completed a lot of line and night shift is working to improve on that.

Kauffman say the night gives firefighters an advantage because wind and temperatures are low and the humidity is high.

Chynna-- kaufman says they are preparing for the hot temperatures that are coming towards the end of the week.

He says the fire could ramp back up as those temperatures rise.
