Utica Police and Fire Crews were called to a home on Bleecker Street just after 3:00 p.m.

Department tls us the dver of a car fled the scene after slamming into a home on bleecker street this evening in utica.

Utica fire chief scott ingersoll tells us the department was called to 919 bleecker street.

When they arrived, both the car and the home were on fire.

The fire chief says the car hit the building so hard, it sheared off a gas pipe in the basement of the home that caused a serious fire that extended to the first floor.

Their were people home at the time of the incident.

They were not hurt and made it out safely at this time the fire has been put out.

Chief ingersoll says their was a concern that the building could explode.

"we have completely extinguished the fire.

We still have an active gas leak right now.

We're waiting for national grid gas crews to arrive so they can dog the street and shut off the gas.

We have opened up all the windows to the building we have established a safe area so if the building were to explode we could minimize damagend potentl injuries."
