UNA Announces Weekly Random Cornonavirus Tests

Breken Terry spoke with UNA's coronavirus task force chairperson about the process of of randomly testing students.

New at five - the university of north alabama will start random coronavirus tests of students and faculty this week.

Waay31's breken terry is live at the university after speaking with the chairperson of it's coronavirus task force about the process, breken?

I'm actually inside una's guillot university center where once a week - some students and staff will be randomly tested.

You can see these signs in the hallway directing people who are randomly selected to the testing room.

Dr. kimberly greenway, una's vice president of student affairs and task force chair person told me students who are solely online and don't come to campus won't be tested.

She said they will randomly test 3% of people on campus.

With just over 8,000 students - that's more than 200 people per week.

She said they will only be testing people who don't have any symptoms. students or staff members will get an email saying they've been selected.

They will have to fill out a survey before getting approval to take the random test.

She told me the whole process is designed to be as safe and easy as possible.

We have a room specialized set up for that but again since it's asymptomatic people there is not risk around so it's in the guillot university center so it's very convenient for students.

Greenway told me teams from the university of alabama in birmingham will come to the university to help administer the tests and take the samples back to its labs.

In total 126 students and staff have had the virus since the pandemic started.

The university reported 43 new cases today.
