Cooperstown Police are investigating vandalism of their "Mask Up" signs after they were found Monday morning with a black X spray-painted over them.

Was one of the first, in the areto e (outside( to the streets.

They put up signs a few weeks ago.... and it appears...some...don' t like what they see.

And now, police are involved.

Newschannel two's caitlin irla is live in the studio to explain.

A big black x...not just on this one... but several others that are set up on and around main street, in cooperstown.... reminding people to mask up!

The markings were first noticed this morning.

And police are actively investigating who's responsible.

I got off the phone with the cooperstown police chief about 15 minutes ago.

He says they're reviewing outside security cameras, on local businesses, to see if any caught the vandal in the act.

He says they have collected evidence and are working on tracking down witnesses.

And they do believe they have a lead on a suspect.

"we spent pretty much the whole day shift working on this reviewing footage and interviewing people so the resources for something that, if you can agree or disagreebute signs."

The signs are found on the perimers the downtoarea...e otsego county office building.... areas where the mask ordinance is in place.
