North Alabama Prepares to open polls on Election day.

Election day is here!

You can see voters lining up at trinity united methodist church....one of many polling locations set to open in the next few hours.

Of course, because of the pandemic ... this is an election like never before.

Even though thousands of people already cast their votes.... for those heading off to the polls today election officials wanted to make it as safe as possible.

Waay 31's ashley carter joins us live now.

Ashley what will people see when casting their votes this year?

Every poll worker will be in full personal protective equipment and they've all been provided these face shields to wear.

Election officials even hired more workers this year who will specifically handle sanitizing the polling locations and the pens after use.

Madison county probate judge frank barger told us they've been preparing for this day for months and says they've made sure every polling location is fully equipped with safety equipment to put everyone's mind at ease when casting their vote today "we have the ppe in place not only for the public, hand sanitizer being able to provide masks, having an excessive number of ink pins, stylists for electronic equipment that we use.

Putting all of that in place is certainly added a different element we feel well prepared for it.

" you do not have to wear a mask to cast your vote today... but wearing one is highly encouraged.

Barger says it's not clear how long people will have to wait in line but he's asking every voter to be patient today when heading to their polling location.
