Senator Gardenhire hangs on to his seat despite a strong challenge from Glenn Scruggs.

While we continue to monitor the ongoing presidential race, elections in tennessee are finalized.

News 12's winston reed breaks down local elections in our area.

Around 2 million people in tennessee voted during the entire election season in 2016.

In 2020, tennesseans reached that 2 million mark before election day.

"i think tennesseans felt comfortable going to vote in clean, secure and safe environments and show their confidence by going to vote in person."

Secretary of state tre hargett is pleased with the turnout.

"obviously everbody was interested in the president trump election or the u.s. senate race or other races.

We're just so delighted so many tennesseans chose to make their voice heard."

Like every race, only one can come out on top.

"well we we're dissappointed with the final result of course."

Chair of the hamilton county democratic party rodney strong is a supporter of democratic candidate for senator of district 10.

Strong says his organization offer much support to scruggs through mailers and phone banking.

Although strong commends the effort of scruggs' campaign team, he explains why the democratic candidate may have fell short at the end.

"he was somewhat hamstrung with the coronavirus because he could not do as much of the door to door big rally campainging like you usually do."

Senator todd gardenhire talks about his plans going forward after beating out glenn scruggs for district 10.

"i'd love to be back on education.

Maybe i can make it back on there and get some things accomplished."
