Within the last hour - we learned decatur city schools will switch to all virtual learning for the rest of the semester as the coronavirus pandemic continues to break records in the area.

He learned the district made the shift after what they call an outbreak within the school system.

As of right now -- more than 800 students and 100 faculuty members are in quarantine.

Nearly 70 students and teachers are positive with covid-19.

Some marginal good news from this -- head nurse sarah payne says that the majority of students who have the virus are showing no symptoms or mild ones.

She says they've only had to declare two outbreak so far this semester.

They define that as two or more people from different households with a common exposure.

So here's what that means for parents and students.

Tomorrow is a regular learning day.

Virtual learning starts on monday, december 14 and will remain that way for the final week of the semester.

Then when students start school again on january 5, they will be in virtual learning until wednesday, january 13.

Superintendent dr. michael douglas says the data they've seen from previous holidays and breaks suggests that waiting to bring people back until after two weeks will help slow the spread of the virus.
