Pharrell Williams Announces Plan to Open Private Schools for Low-Income Families.
Williams is taking action to help families in his home state, Virginia.
The musician revealed to ‘The Virginian-Pilot’ that he plans to open a number of private schools specifically for low-income families.
The schools will address the “fixed and unfair” education system by offering “future-forward education” to students.
We don’t want lockstep learning where so many kids fall behind; we want bespoke learning designed for each child, where the things that make a child different are the same things that will make a child rise up and take flight, Pharrell Williams, to ‘The Virginian-Pilot’.
The first school, Yellowhab, will open to elementary-aged students in the fall of 2021.
[Yellowhab will offer] an immersive educational environment that sparks imagination in a story-filled space where children transcend the [every day] on a journey for deeper learning, Yellowhab, via website.
40 to 50 students in grades 3 to 5 will be offered a spot at Yellowhab via a lottery system.
Applicants will be selected based on need, including family income requirements and being qualified for the Federal Free and Reduced-Price Lunch program.
The price of attendance for all students will be free for at least the first year, with costs covered by philanthropic support
