Boston's new racial-equity fund pauses fundraising as Walsh heads to D.C.

One of the two similar funds launched in Massachusetts last year in wake of the Black Lives Matter demonstrations says it's pausing fundraising, and transferring most of the money it's raised to the other just as Mayor Marty Walsh prepares to leave office. The city of Boston is transferring money raised for its Racial Equity Fund to a similarly focused, but statewide private-sector alternative, the New Commonwealth Fund. The move throws the fund’s future into uncertainty less than a year after Walsh launched the initiative in the wake of George Floyd’s death at the hands of Minneapolis police.
