S&P/ASX 200 (INDEXASX:XJO) is on track for a third straight day of gains as it rose 0.26% to 7,279 points by about 1.10 pm as new loan commitments in Australia for housing lifted in April. New loan commitments for housing rose 3.7% in April 2021 (seasonally adjusted) to a record high of $31.0 billion according to statistics released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). ABS head of Finance and Wealth Katherine Keenan said: “The value of new loan commitments for owner occupier housing reached another all-time high in April 2021, up 4.3% to $23.0 billion. “New loan commitments for investors rose 2.1% to $8.1 billion, which was the highest level since mid-2017.” US jobless claims decline Data released overnight in the US, including initial jobless claims and payrolls, came in better than expected showing strong signs for the US economy. However, investors now fear that the US Federal Reserve stimulus could be withdrawn sooner than previously expected. Investors will closely watch the critical US nonfarm jobs data which will be released tonight.
