South Korea’s parliament endorses landmark legislation outlawing dog meat industry

South Korea’s parliament has endorsed legislation outlawing the country's dog meat industry. The National Assembly passed the bill by a 208-0 vote Tuesday and it will become law after a presidential signing and other formalities. The bill would make the slaughtering, breeding, trade and sale of dog meat for human consumption illegal from 2027 and punish such acts with up to 3 years in prison. It doesn't stipulate a penalty for eating dog meat. Farmers and other figures in South Korea's dwindling dog meat industry have fiercely fought efforts to ban consumption. Recent surveys show a majority of South Koreans don’t eat dog meat any longer.
