First conviction for anti-CAA protests under new UP law

In the first conviction made against anti-CAA and NRC protestors under the Uttar Pradesh Recovery of Damages to Public and Private Property Act, 2020, the Meerut division of the claims tribunal of the Act has directed 86 people accused of "damaging public property during protests in Amroha (three years ago)" to pay an aggregate compensation of Rs 4,27,439. A copy of the tribunal's directions has been forwarded to Amroha district magistrate BK Tripathi to go ahead with the recovery. Under the newly-made Act, three tribunals -- Meerut, Lucknow and Prayagraj -- were constituted across the state of UP.
