Iraq: Assault by PKK militants leaves 5 Kurdish security members dead

(MENAFN) On Saturday, Jun. 5 five members of a Kurdish security force recognized as Peshmerga died in an ambush by fighters of the Turkish outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in the Iraqi semi-autonomous Kurdistan region. Local authorities stated in a report that "a Peshmerga force was ambushed in the morning by PKK militants in Matin Mountain in Duhok province in northern Iraq, leaving five Peshmerga members killed and four others wounded." The Peshmerga forces were on a mission of maintaining security and stability for the people of the villages in the frontier parts with Turkey when the assault took place, said the report. The report further said: "we had previously warned of such incidents, and everyone must respect the borders of the Kurdistan region and not endanger its stability."
