Force celebrates Volunteers’ Week with a big thank you to its amazing Special Constables and police support volunteers.

Monday 1 June marks the start of Volunteers’ Week and National Specials Weekend.

Devon & Cornwall’s contingent of 360 police support volunteers cover 17 different roles and have given up 24,063 hours of their time since April 2019. Our volunteers support our Force in a broad variety of capacities, ranging from chaplains, vehicle checkers and local policing support to diverse communities support volunteers.

In the same period, the Force’s 266 attested Special Constables have contributed 76,779 hours helping tackle crime in their local area, supporting regular officers by going out on patrol and engaging with our communities.

Head of Citizens in Policing for Devon & Cornwall Police, Emma Webber, said: “The annual national Volunteers’ Week is an opportunity for us to offer our sincere thanks and recognise the significant contribution all our volunteers play in supporting both Devon & Cornwall Police and our wider communities.

“Whatever role they undertake within the Force, it is humbling to see such commitment and passion and we are honoured as a police service to have them as part of our police family.”

Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer said: “It is a huge privilege to recognise and thank all volunteers for their tireless energy and commitment that they give without any thought of personal recognition.

“Each year Volunteers’ Week is an opportunity to focus on the outstanding contribution provided by our Specials, volunteers and cadets in support of their communities and colleagues within Devon and Cornwall. It is particularly poignant, during the current COVID-19 response that Specials and volunteers have been at the forefront of our endeavour. This year, more than ever, we truly celebrate you and all that you do.

“Thank you all for your invaluable contribution and support.”
