Why was NYC's response different than Ferguson's?

Demonstrators disrupt NYC streets over the decision not to charge a police officer in the death of Eric Garner. The protests are large, but mostly peaceful, nothing like the rioting in Ferguson, Missouri after a grand jury cleared the police officer who killed Michael Brown.
