“Dear Evan Hansen,” Universal’s musical based on the Tony-winning stage play, brought in $800,000 in the film’s Thursday night previews from 2,700 screens beginning at 7:00 p.m.. It opens on over 3,364 screens this weekend.

“Dear Evan Hansen” is projected for an opening between $9-12 million, and it opens in a quiet week for new releases at the box office with the studio saying that it’s tracking well across all demos, particularly with women 17-34. And the film’s trailer even racked up over 21 million views on YouTube since it debuted in May.

But the movie has been hounded by some negative buzz, both in terms of its disappointing reviews (it currently has a 36% score on Rotten Tomatoes) and online questions about whether its star Ben Platt at 27 years old should have reprised his role as a high school teenager, as well as for its themes about teenage suicide and anxiety. As TheWrap reported earlier this week, the studio was aiming to head off the harsh reviews and find ways to respond to the backlash.

Stephen Chbosky (“The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” “Wonder,” “Beauty and the Beast”) directs “Dear Evan Hansen,” which is the story of a socially awkward high school teen (Platt) who finds himself caught in a white lie that spirals out of control when he pretends to a family that he was best friends with another student who recently committed suicide.

Based on the play by Steven Levenson and featuring music by “La La Land’s” Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the film also stars Kaitlyn Dever, Nik Dodani, Amandla Stenberg, Amy Adams, Julianne Moore and Danny Pino.

“Dear Evan Hansen” is produced by Marc Platt and by Adam Siegel and is executive produced by Steven Levenson, Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, Michael Bederman and Tony winner Stacey Mindich, who produced the musical stage play.
